October 3

WHAT: Susan Smith Blakely, author, will speak about her book, "Best Friends at the Bar: What Women Need to Know about a Career in the Law", at St. Thomas

WHEN: Monday, October 3, 2011, 11:30 am

WHERE: Room A-111
Susan Smith Blakely knows what it takes to succeed in the practice of law. During her 25 years of experience she has viewed the legal profession from many perspectives—as a law firm associate, counsel and partner, and as a chief of staff to an elected official in the public sector. As a parent who chose to take a lengthy leave of absence from her practice during her children’s formative years, she has first- hand knowledge of the difficult decisions women lawyers must make in terms of work and family life.

Ms. Blakely's book, Best Friends at the Bar: What Women Need to Know about a Career in the Law, is the first, true guidebook for young women contemplating law school, young women law students and young women in their first years of law practice. The book informs the reader about the state of women in the law today, including the very low retention rates for women lawyers, and the author explores the issues of work-life struggle and competing in a male dominated profession as underlying causes for the low retention rates. The book provides excellent advice and insight from over 60 contributors, most of them women lawyers and judges from throughout the country, on how to address these issues and succeed.
